Attention to
detail...
All Matthew James'
furniture, whether fitted or freestanding, is handmade in our own workshop by
our team of highly skilled craftsmen, who have also been trained in the
traditional skills of joinery. The furniture is made using only the finest
materials available, which originate from sustainably managed woodlands
throughout the world. The most common timbers we use include European Oak,
Walnut, Cherry, Maple, Ash and Tulipwood for the painted furniture.
Our doors are constructed from seasoned
hardwoods using traditional mortice and tenon joints. They are then hung within
separate timber frames with butt hinges. Our veneered cabinets are polished
along with the drawers that are crafted from matching solid timber and expertly
dovetailed for lasting strength. They are supported on the highest quality,
concealed, soft closing runners, for effortless use and greater durability.
Painted furniture is without doubt the most popular, which of course
can be painted in any colour of your choice.

In the
beginning...
Created from a desire to
provide high quality furniture, Matthew James was established in 1994 by
myself, Michael Chadwick and was named after my son.
Assisted by my partner Anna, we are a well established family
company with our workshop based in the heart of Oldham and our showroom in the
small village of Grotton, Saddleworth. We are a company that retains it's
tradtional values of meeting individual customer requirements at its
heart.
My background has always been in
joinery. After leaving school at 15, I began an apprenticeship, where I was
taught the traditional skills of joinery, of which I continue to use to this
day. Even after three decades in the industry, I'm is still as passionate and
enthusiastic about cabinetry today, as I was on the first day I
started.
Matthew James creates furniture
that is unique. There are no standard designs, nor do they have standard sizes
- just furniture that meets your precise, personal
requirements.
